Philadanco Performance Review

Last Friday September 23, Philadanco Dance Company graced the Bryn Mawr College Goodhart stage with four distinct pieces by four different choreographers. Performing for a full house audience of Tri-Co faculty/staff/students and community members, Philadanco danced Labess, Hand Singing Song, Between The Lines, and Enemy Behind the Gates. The event was presented by the Bryn Mawr College Performing Arts Series as the opener to their 2016-2017 season as well as a participating event in the Fringe Festival 2016.

Philadanco Master Class

Today, Philadanco led a free open master class open in Bryn Mawr College’s Pembroke studio. Philadanco, also known as the Philadelphia Dance Company, will perform tomorrow night Friday, September 23 at 8pm in Goodhart as part of the Bryn Mawr College Performing Arts Series. The performance is also part of Fringe Festival 2016. The Bryn Mawr College Dance Program has a partnership with the Performing Arts Series for hosting master classes with the visiting dance artists. This is a wonderful opportunity for Tri-Co students to interact with and learn from word class artists.IMG_5178 Continue reading

In The Swing Of Things

Yesterday was Fall Frolic, which means it’s time for student clubs and activities (and academic work) to get in full swing. This was actually the first time since my first year at Bryn Mawr that I didn’t have to table for a club. In the past, I have tabled for both the Asian Students Association and for Choom Boom K-Pop Dance Club. This time, I walked by the club booths and ate the brownies served by Erdman. Signing up for a student club is an excellent way to meet new friends and explore new hobbies. Although I didn’t sign up for many new clubs because of time constraints, I couldn’t wait to see who would join clubs I was already part of. (If you missed Fall Frolic, you can join club listservs here.)

This week is tech week for the Bryn Mawr College Dance Department’s Annual Spring Dance Concert. Bryn Mawr and Haverford dancers, faculty choreographers, and theater lighting and backstage managers all work together to prepare for the show this weekend April 23 & 24 in Goodhart. It is a stressful and tiring time of the year, including schoolwork, but we somehow manage to get through 3 hour rehearsals, costume fittings, lighting design, getting used to stage spacing, etc…

SAS Culture Show

Also on Saturday night was the South Asian Students Culture Show. This year, the theme of the South Asian Students Annual Culture Show was “Dekh Magar Pyar Se” which loosely translates to “Look, but with love.” Students portrayed this through various forms of dances, songs and spoken word poetry.12729200_10154335515777923_9187538655143394621_n

On Thursday, the Bryn Mawr College Dance Department brought choreographer Jody Oberfelder to the Modern III dance class to lead a masterclass on neuroscience and dance. She recently choreographed a dance exploring the motions and functions of neurons (brain cells), and we got to watch short excerpts of her piece, “Dance of the Neurons.”
