This past Wednesday September 28, Dr. Dana Litt of the University of Washington Center for the Study of Health and Risk Behaviors discussed the role of social media on alcohol use in adolescents in a talk titled “Pictures of Last Night Ended Up Online: Social Networking Sites and Alcohol Use” (a play on the lyrics from a Katy Perry song). According to Dr. Litt, 75% of drinking in the USA is done in heavy episodic drinking (formerly known as binge drinking). The percentage is trending upwards, with women under the age of 25 being the fastest growing group. Dr. Litt discussed her research finding ways to explore the influences of social media on drinking and possible ways to lower heavy drinking in at risk populations.

This past Tuesday September 27, the Bryn Mawr College Political Science department invited Kiyoyuki Seguchi, Research Director of the Canon Institute for the Global Studies, to lecture on the Chinese economy and Japan-China relations. Citing China’s recent transition into domestic-demand from export-investment and the rapid growth of the middle class, Seguchi hypothesized the future of China’s regional and global influences. The event was organized by my former political science professor, Professor Seung-Youn Oh, and she encouraged Seguchi to also include South Korea in his presentation.image Continue reading

Exerting College Independence Through Hair Dye

This past weekend, I was offered the creative freedom to ombre my friend’s hair. I really am no expert when it comes to hair dye, but people often assume so because currently I have blonde streaks in my hair. Over the course of my college career, I’ve experimented with a box of reddish brown hair dye I found in the free box my first year, a free ombre kit I got from Rent The Runway, and the blonde streaks I paid another Mawrter to do on me. (I also often get free haircuts from my roommate!)

Extreme Keys & S-chords Concert

Last night, the Bryn Mawr Extreme Keys and Haverford S-chords hosted a joint concert to celebrate their new members. The twist was that the S-chord new members had no idea they were going to be blind folded and led to the Radnor common room at Bryn Mawr to perform on the spot. The concert was an exemplary Bi-Co collaboration between two popular student run acapella groups.unnamed-4
