On Saturday April 22, Temple University Hospital hosted a Health Festival in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the hospital. There were free health screenings, giveaways, food, activities, and more. I volunteered on behalf of the Center for Asian Health which provided blood pressure screenings, BMI measurements, and Type 2 diabetes risk tests.

NYSDOH AIDS Institute Panel
On Wednesday April 12, Dr. Bruce Agins (HC’75) and 4 of his current interns (all recent Haverford alums) came to Haverford to present on some of their work at the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute based in New York City. I was a Bi-Co extern at the AIDS Institute two years ago, so of course I attended the panel. I am also interested in public health and policy and would love to work at the AIDS Institute if granted the opportunity. Continue reading
Haverford Public Policy Forum
On Saturday March 18, Haverford’s Center for Peace and Global Citizenship hosted their annual Public Policy Forum. The day-long event is a space for students to interact with Bi-Co alum working in various public policy fields ranging from education, law, foreign policy, to health and environment. I attended last year’s forum and was happy to return again this year.
Center for Asian Health Internship Updates & More
I have been working as a research intern at the Center for Asian Health affiliated with Temple University’s Medical School for almost the past two months now. Every Tuesday and Friday afternoon, I take the SEPTA train into the city to the office. My mentor is a clinical psychologist, and we are currently working on a project analyzing the relationship between chronic conditions, related factors, and management methods in the Asian American community. Women in Medical Research Panel
On Tuesday November 15, the Health Professions Advisors hosted a panel on women in medical research. The panel featured 3 women at different stages of their medical careers who spoke to students about pathways into medical research, trends among women in the field, and advice on balancing professional and personal lives.
External Review on Health Professions Advising
Yesterday, I was invited to an external review session on Bryn Mawr’s Health Professions Advising. Bryn Mawr undergraduates of all different years, but mostly seniors, took this opportunity to provide feedback on what they do or do not like about our pre-health advising system. The external review board was made up of health professions advisors from other schools such as Tufts, Wesleyan, Colgate, and Johns Hopkins. They wrote down notes on our comments to provide constructive recommendations for the Bryn Mawr Health Professions Advising. Every department at Bryn Mawr goes through an external review every 10 years. Continue reading
Public Health Graduate Programs Panel
This Monday night, the Health Professions Advising Offices at Haverford and Bryn Mawr and the Health Studies Program hosted an Information Session about Public Health Graduate Study. Admissions representatives from Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Harvard and Yale Schools of Public Health were there.The panel started with a brief introduction to public health, or “the health of the population as a whole, especially as monitored, regulated, and promoted by the state.” Then the panelists explained the widespread importance of public health careers to society, from biostatisticians to health care policy makers to health economists. Public health overlaps with everything — politics, environmental issues, philanthropy, law, research, etc.
