Winter Break Reading: Uncommon Women and Others

My winter break readings of choice are Wendy Wasserstein’s plays Uncommon Women and Others, Isn’t It Romantic?, and The Heidi Chronicles. I had heard of the plays through an alum who had posted a quote about Bryn Mawr from Uncommon Women and Others on the Facebook group You Know You Went To Bryn Mawr College When….

Wendy W86asserstein received her B.A. in history from Mount Holyoke College in 1971, an M.A. in creative writing from City College of New York in 1973, and an M.F.A. in fine arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1976. Uncommon Women and Others was her graduate thesis at Yale. She won the Tony Award, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play The Heidi Chronicles in 1989. Her plays typically focus on feminism, family relations, and pop culture.

I finished reading Uncommon Women and Others and Isn’t It Romantic? and am starting The Heidi ChroniclesContinue reading

Magic Gardens

One of the classic Philadelphia tourist attractions is Magic Gardens, a courtyard on South Street covered in mosaics and interesting objects. It is artist Isaiah Zagar’s largest public artwork and he completed the gardens in a 14 year time span (1994-2008). Almost every Bryn Mawr student has pictures of themselves at Magic Garden on their Facebook profiles.12369028_10154166834797923_7783763126095239897_n

BMCS Bonding + Miley Cyrus Concert Review

The Bryn Mawr Concert Series committee enjoyed a fun night together this past Saturday night. (No, we didn’t go to Snowball.) We had received SGA funding to do bonding activities, which meant dinner at Sushiland and a Miley Cyrus concert. Our committee is made up of students who apply through SGA appointments to join, so not everyone knows each other before joining (or has the same music taste).IMG_9648 Continue reading

A Visit to My Vassar Sister (kind of)

The still-thinking-about-fall-break post …

Vassar Main Gate

Vassar Main Gate

One of the highlights of my fall break was going to Vassar College to see my boyfriend. He wasn’t able to go home this fall break because he is from California. It was pretty easy to get to Vassar via public transportation. I took NJTransit from my home to Penn Station, walked to Grand Central, then took the Metro North to Poughkeepsie — all within 3 hours and 45 minutes. My best friend from my hometown goes to Marist College and has a car, so she picked me up from the train station, grabbed lunch at Rossi’s Deli with me, and drove me to Vassar. Continue reading

Obligatory Fall Break Post

Fall break is finally upon us! Let us bask in this week of no classes until midterms (part 2) hit us again…

(Fall break is a privilege. Most schools do not have a fall break. If they do have a fall break, it’s usually just a 3 or 4 day weekend, not a full week enjoyed by the lucky few private liberal arts colleges and universities. )

What do Mawrters do over fall break? Some of us study, some of us don’t. Some of us go home or travel, some of us can’t. Some of us have to stay on campus because those taking UPenn classes still have class. Some of us have to stay on campus because they live too far away. Most of us are happy it’s fall break.

Chinatown Night Market

Tonight, Chinatown’s streets were transformed into a crowd of food trucks and food stands, music, entertainment, and more for the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corp. Night Marketunnamed

Night markets are popular food and entertainment attractions in Asia, especially among the young people who like to go out late. Unlike tonight’s temporary pop-up night market in Philly, night markets in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, China, etc. are permanent structures. I hope to travel to Asia someday to experience an authentic night market, but for now, this is the closest I will get.

Temple Men’s Tennis vs. Rider

I’m always curious about what it’s like at other colleges. I think it’s also important to stay open minded and go out of your usual zone. This would seem easy in a place like Philadelphia where there are so many colleges and universities, but I think you need a friend, or a friend of a friend, there to invite you to all the events/parties. Bryn Mawr does have an academic connection to UPenn, but I have yet to take a Penn class, so I don’t really have friends there.

Luckily, I have a cousin who goes to Temple University (a public large research university), which is just one stop past Jefferson on the R5 SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale. I was already in Philadelphia this Saturday for the Mid-Autumn Festival, so I decided to go watch my cousin’s D1 tennis match against Rider University.
