On Sunday, my friend Joy’17 and I went to see the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet at the Prince Theater in Philadelphia. We were blown away by the theatrical expression, artistry, and technique these dancers brought to the stage!

Spring Dance Concert
From auditions, to rehearsals, to extra rehearsals, and dress and tech (don’t forget the makeup), my undergraduate dance career all came to a finish this past weekend at the Spring Dance Concert. Dancing in the Bryn Mawr Dance Program has been an integral part of my college experience, and I will never forget the technique, artistry, and professionalism I learned from the many choreographers and teachers I have been honored to work with.

Choom Boom Showcase
Also on Saturday March 18 was Choom Boom’s first showcase. I have been a part of the Bi-Co’s one and only K-Pop dance club since my first year, and it’s amazing to see how far we have come as a group. Having our own showcase was only just a dream maybe 2 years ago. As more students joined the club, we gained more establishment as a dance group.

InVisIBle: A Thesis Performance
I had the honor of working with my good friend JoyAngelica Chan’17 and 5 other Bi-Co dancers on Joy’s thesis dance piece InVisIBle, which was performed last Saturday and Sunday nights in the Hepburn Teaching Theater. Joy had been working on this project for the past 9 months, including the approximate 4 months of rehearsals with the dancers.

FUCS: Rico Nasty // Eu1ogy
To round off my weekend of fun before Sunday’s homework duties call me, I went to the FUCS show at Haverford on Saturday night. The performers were Eu1ogy and Rico Nasty, both up and coming artists whom I have never heard of before. This was the first FUCS show of the Spring semester, and I was glad I made it out to enjoy my numbered free college concerts before I graduate.

Hidden Figures at BMFI
The Bryn Mawr College Computer Science and Physics Departments sponsored tickets to see the film Hidden Figures at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute on Wednesday, February 8. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe as real life NASA mathematicians Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson who were involved in calculating the US’s first trajectories into space in the 1960s.

Bryn Mawr Performing Arts Series: Wintry Mix
On Friday January 27, the Bryn Mawr Performing Arts Series presented the first of two unique Wintry Mix shows. Wintry Mix is a performance festival of theater, dance, video, and music. The concept behind the design is to allow multiple artists to showcase their work across genres and traditional boundaries. The Friday lineup consisted Chelsea and Magda (everybodygetinthecar.com), David Brick (headlong.org), Jenna Horton (jennahorton.com), Sam Tower (samtower-ensemble.org), Peter Rose (peterrosepicture.com/), Chlamydia Dell-Arte, and closed with a set by Japanese Breakfast (michellezauner.bandcamp.com).

Parsons Dance at Prince Theater
On Saturday December 10, Joy and I attended the Parson Dance Performance at the Prince Theater. We were especially excited to see the performance because we had just taken a masterclass with two of the dancers the day before. The house was quite crowded, but we managed to buy student rush tickets for two seats next to each other at the back of the house. The program consisted of 6 pieces with a brief intermission and Q & A with the company at the end of the show.

Parsons Dance Masterclass
The Parsons Dance Company, a New York City based modern dance company, is in Philadelphia this weekend performing new and familiar works. As part of their visit, they also led an open masterclass for the community hosted by NextMove Dance at Drexel University’s Ellen Forman Studio. Most who attended were students from Drexel, but some were adults from the city, a student from Swarthmore, and two from Bryn Mawr — my friend Joy Chan ’17 and me.
Ms. Lisa Fischer and Grand Baton
Legendary singer and 2-time Grammy winner Lisa Fischer graced Bryn Mawr College two times this week. First was on the movie screen in the documentary “20 Feet From Stardom” showing hosted by the Provost’s Office and the Sociology Department on Thursday December 1. Second was on the Goodhart McPherson mainstage with her band Grand Baton playing as part of the Bryn Mawr Performing Arts Series on Saturday December 3.
