It has been a pretty stressful election season for many of us at the Mawr and beyond. Like me, you’ve probably been overexposed to media coverage of conversations and controversies surrounding the candidates. All of this culminated on Tuesday November 8th — election day. From back-to-back shuttles provided by Bryn Mawr College Civic Engagement to constant statistics updates and social media proof that so-and-so voted, the push to get out the vote, especially among college students, ran strong. Dr. Meltem Izzetoglu on fNIR Technology
The Department of Physics Colloquium Series continued on Monday November 7th with a presentation by Dr. Meltem Izzetoglu of Drexel University School of Biomedical Engineering on “Functional Optical Brain Monitoring: Principles and Applications.” Dr. Izzetoglu spoke about an emerging neuroimaging technology called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRs) and its applications to detecting anything from fatigue and awareness in critical jobs like pilots to learning disabilities in children.

A Very GOTV Day
The perks of attending a women’s college in a swing state during election season are that a flood of celebrities and politicians pass through Philadelphia. On another beautiful sunny day at the Mawr this past Wednesday November 2, Academy Award winning actress Anne Hathaway made a stop at Bryn Mawr College, among other universities in the area. In her brief 10-minute speech, Hathaway encouraged us to get out and vote, and of course, to vote Hillary Clinton for president. With just less than a week to Election Day, the campaign spirit on campus has been very active. If the below picture does not accurately describe how invested Bryn Mawr students are in this election, let me tell you about the other ways students are getting involved in voter registration and participation outreach efforts.
Cathy Dang of CAAAV on “New Conversations on Race and Asians”
On October 25, the Bryn Mawr College Asian Students Association invited the president of CAAAV: Organizing Communities Cathy Dang to speak on the current state of race relations and CAAAV’s record of helping Asian Americans in the New York City community. CAAAV is one of the most established Asian American activism organizations in the New York area, and their dedication to lobbying for housing rights, workers unions, and police reform can be traced back to the early 1980s.

Testing Microsoft Hololens in Class
The Bryn Mawr College Physics Senior Seminar class was in for a special treat on Monday October 24. Education specialists from Bryn Mawr College’s Blended Learning Initiative and Pearson Education Corporation brought in the latest Microsoft Hololens for students to test and give feedback on. Lucky for us, Pearson contacted Bryn Mawr College first about this demo opportunity because it turns out two Bryn Mawr alum work for Pearson! While the product is still in development, educators, gamers, and enthusiasts alike are already brainstorming uses in and out of the classroom. 
Family Weekend ft. My Parents
This weekend October 21-22 is Family Weekend at Bryn Mawr! Parents, family members, siblings, and friends unite to sit in on lectures, attend faculty talks, observe campus life, and participate in special activities like s’mores and acapella, movie night, and arts and crafts. My parents drove in from Ridgewood, NJ to do ALL of those. They claim that because it’s my last year at Bryn Mawr, it’s their last chance to experience Family Weekend (they’ve attended every year except my 2nd year).

Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood visits Bryn Mawr
On Tuesday October 18, Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, visited Bryn Mawr College to talk about women’s rights to healthcare and the upcoming presidential election. The event was hosted by the Bryn Mawr College Democrats (with president Nora Dell ’19 interviewing) and Facebook live streamed to the Hillary for Pennsylvania page.

Dr. Anne White of MIT on Nuclear Fusion
On Monday October 3, the Physics Department invited Dr. Anne White of MIT to Bryn Mawr College to give a colloquium talk on nuclear fusion. Dr. White also spoke to physics students during the physics senior seminar, and presented her public presentation on her research later that day. She is the Cecil and Ida Green Associate Professor in Nuclear Engineering at MIT.

The Senior Mentality: Class, Colloquium, and … Cocktails
I think many seniors can agree with me that senior year is our one last time to do the things we love at Bryn Mawr College. This includes trying new things, whether that means taking a class outside your major, going out into Philadelphia more often, making new friends, or finally getting around to taking advantage of Bryn Mawr’s resources. Senior year is our victory lap, and you bet we are going to celebrate from time to time. Enter in Senior Cocktails, a themed “classy” party organized by our class presidents multiple times throughout the year. Last Saturday October 1 was the first senior cocktail of the year. The theme was “Starry Night” and many seniors showed up to have some fun.

ASA Culture Show: A Work in Translation
This past Saturday October 1, the Bryn Mawr College Asian Students Association hosted their culture show in Goodhart Hall for a mostly full house audience.
“A Work in Translation” aims to explore issues such as language translation, identity translation, and empowerment in translation. Performers include Afreen, Choom Boom, Hometown Hero, Mayuri, Rhea Manglani, and Tai-One, as well as comedian Subhah Agarwal, spoken word artist Rachel Rostad, and taiko drumming group Kyo Daiko. Free food will be served in the Goodhart Music Room after the show.
